Accessibility

Varsity Stack is built to be usable by every athlete and every staff member, including those who use a screen reader, navigate without a mouse, enlarge text, or rely on other assistive technology. This page describes where we stand, how we know, and what we have not yet verified.

Conformance status

We maintain an Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) for Varsity Stack, prepared using the VPAT® 2.5Rev, WCAG Edition — the reporting format published by the Information Technology Industry Council and the one most university procurement and accessibility offices ask for.

Across the 56 Level A and Level AA success criteria in the report, every active WCAG 2.2 criterion is rated either Supports or Not Applicable. No criterion is rated Partially Supports or Does Not Support.

An ACR is a self-assessment, not a certificate. No one issues or audits it. Its value is in the detail behind each rating, which is why we publish this summary openly and provide the full criterion-by-criterion report on request.

What the report covers

The report evaluates two surfaces as one product:

• The athlete app — the native iOS and Android application: Home, Stack, Track, Scan and Settings.
• The staff dashboard — the browser-based application at app.varsitystack.com, used by authorized university and club staff.

Explicitly outside the report’s scope, and stated as such in it:

• This marketing website, which carries no application function. We hold these pages to the same standard, but they are not part of the evaluated product and no criterion-level claim is made about them.
• The athlete app rendered under React Native Web. That rendering exists but is not a shipped product surface and has not been tested.
• Braille displays. Not tested on any platform, and we make no support claim.
• WCAG Level AAA. Not assessed, as permitted by the VPAT format.

How we tested

The assessment combined four methods, all complete for version 1.9.0.

1. Source review. A criterion-by-criterion review of both applications against WCAG 2.2 Levels A and AA, conducted August 7–10, 2026, with every finding recorded by severity, component and success criterion.
2. Automated checking, enforced continuously. An accessibility gate runs on every change to the codebase. It fails the build if any control lacks an accessible name, if a mobile control omits its role, if a text field loses its label, if a data table header omits its scope, if a recorded color pair drops below its threshold, or if the keyboard focus indicator is suppressed. The current run covers 253 mobile pressables, 249 declared roles, 26 text fields, 114 web buttons and links and 12 table headers, with no exceptions. Contrast is measured rather than estimated: 56 color pairs are computed on every run, compositing translucent foregrounds onto the surface they actually sit on.
3. Manual code-level inspection of focus management, dialog semantics, live regions, gesture and dragging alternatives, page titles, orientation, error copy and authentication design — the questions automation cannot answer.
4. Manual assistive-technology testing. Ten planned procedures covering mobile screen-reader operation, onboarding semantics, dashboard keyboard and screen-reader workflows, dialogs and focus, text scaling and color, browser zoom and reflow, text spacing, authentication, the scanner fallback and landscape orientation. All ten were completed and passed on version 1.9.0.

What this means in practice

• Screen readers. Every interactive control carries a name and a role, and states such as selected, checked, expanded and disabled are exposed rather than shown only in color. Saves, validation errors, stack changes and check-in submissions are announced without moving focus.
• Larger text. Nothing in the athlete app opts out of the system text size. Screens were tested at enlarged settings for clipping, overlap and unreachable controls.
• Any orientation. The athlete app is no longer locked to portrait. Every screen works in landscape, which matters for a device mounted to a wheelchair.
• Keyboard only. The staff dashboard’s workflows complete without a mouse, with a visible focus indicator throughout, a skip link that moves focus rather than only scrolling, and no keyboard trap.
• Zoom and reflow. The dashboard reflows at 200% and 400% zoom and at a 320 pixel viewport without two-dimensional scrolling, and survives the WCAG text-spacing override.
• Contrast. Every authored text color meets or exceeds 4.5:1, and every control carries a permanent indicator at 3:1 or better — at rest, not only on hover or focus.
• No motion you did not ask for. Nothing blinks, scrolls or auto-updates, and the scanner’s animation honors your system reduce-motion setting.
• Sign-in without a puzzle. No CAPTCHA, image transcription or object-recognition test on any authentication path. Password managers can fill the fields and nothing blocks paste.
• Alternatives to gestures. Every drag or swipe has a single-pointer equivalent, including widget reordering, and every small target meets the minimum size.
• Scanning is never the only route. An athlete who cannot aim a camera can reach the same products by manual search, and that path was verified with a screen reader.

Assistive technology we have verified

These are coverage statements about what we tested, not separate conformance ratings. “Verified” means the applicable manual procedure was completed and passed on version 1.9.0.

Braille displays are the one exception and remain outside this list: they have not been tested on any platform, and we make no support claim for them.

We provide it to institutions, athletic departments and accessibility offices on request.
