Yes, SARMs are banned by the NCAA. Its 2026 to 27 list names ostarine, ligandrol, RAD140 and S-23 in the banned muscle building drug class. A product sold as a supplement or research chemical does not get an exemption.
SARMs and the NCAA at a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is ostarine banned? | Yes, the NCAA names it |
| Is ligandrol banned? | Yes, including the name LGD-4033 |
| Does research use only mean allowed? | No, a sales label does not change the banned ingredient |
| Are these ordinary supplements? | No. The FDA says SARMs are unapproved drugs |
| Do WADA rules differ? | SARMs are also banned at all times under WADA rules |
What does SARM mean?
SARM stands for selective androgen receptor modulator. Their effects can resemble those of muscle building steroids.
That is a drug category, not a type of protein powder. The FDA has not approved SARMs and warns against using them. Selling a product online does not mean the agency has checked its safety.
Which names should you look for on a label?
A code and a plain name may refer to the same drug. USADA, the US Anti-Doping Agency, lists these common names:
| Name you may see | Other names to recognize |
|---|---|
| Ostarine | Enobosarm, MK-2866 |
| Ligandrol | LGD-4033 |
The NCAA names SARMs as a group, with examples. An unfamiliar name is not proof that a substance is allowed. Its list also covers related drugs beyond the named examples.
This table helps you spot a problem. It is not a complete list of names or a way to clear a product.
Does a research label change the rule?
No. USADA warns athletes to avoid products marketed as research compounds that claim to contain SARMs. The drug name matters more than the sales pitch.
Illustrative example: a label lists MK-2866 but says nothing about ostarine. USADA identifies those names as the same substance. The missing plain name does not make it a different product category.
Do not use a seller's wording as your rules check. Bring the label to your athletics staff.
Can ostarine be hidden in a supplement?
Yes. USADA warns that some sellers omit ostarine from a label or use another name. That means reading the label is only one part of checking a product.
Our guide to supplements and positive drug tests explains why hidden ingredients matter. A label that looks clear cannot prove what is inside.
What are the health risks?
The FDA links SARMs to serious health problems. Its warning includes liver injury, acute liver failure, and a higher risk of heart attack or stroke.
The agency also warns about hormone and sexual health effects. It urges people who have used these products to consult a healthcare professional.
This is not a question of finding a dose that fits your training. Talk with a qualified clinician about health concerns. Do not rely on a seller to manage them.
Are SARMs banned only during competition?
USADA says WADA bans SARMs at all times, including outside competition. WADA is the World Anti-Doping Agency. Its rulebook is separate from the NCAA's.
For college sport, use the current NCAA list and your athletics staff. For a second sport program, check that program's rules too. Our NCAA banned substances guide explains the college list.
What should you do before buying a supplement?
- Scan it in Varsity Stack first. Check an ordinary supplement against our certification database before you buy.
- Stop if you find a SARM name. A certification search cannot make a banned drug allowed.
- Show the full label to your athletics staff. The NCAA asks athletes to check with staff before use.
- Keep a record. Log products you take in your stack and keep a photo of the lot number.
- Ask about unknown names. Do not guess from a front label or a research disclaimer.
Check supplements with Varsity Stack
Scan a barcode or take a photo of a label to check it against our certification database. Add products you take to your stack. A scan does not override a banned ingredient or replace staff review.
For coaches, sports dietitians and athletic trainers: review each athlete's stack and product certification status in the team dashboard.
Request access for your program
Varsity Stack does not laboratory test supplements, and certification lowers risk without removing it.
